THE SUN STILL SETS IN THE WEST: REEM WAHEED

22 October - 19 November 2026

Over days, months and years, the places we live in transition so drastically, we forget the previous iterations of our home.

Grounded in the idea of home and how our surrounding environment informs our upbringing, this body of work investigates the results of modernity and its alteration on people, places and cultures in Raajje.

Through observation and collaging every-day scenes and the imagined, these paintings address and encapsulate the current period of nuanced transition. From natural landscapes to urban design, from dancing to commuting, from locals to migrants - these works capture the crossroads we are in. They reveal the divergence from our inherited ways of life, our connection to our land and seas, while softly questioning how quickly we accept unfamiliar and conflicting ideals from lands beyond.

For as long as we have taken care of our islands, we have been blessed to end our days watching the sun set over the horizon. Now, we count the days before its looming destruction and face the unforgivable loss of being able to look out at the open sea.
